Passenger excited about Avelo Air’s low-cost service have described travel on the start-up’s refreshed 737s as a ‘little bit of heaven.’ Now the airline is actually offering service out of HVN—-not the heavenly paradise, but Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN).
The HVN-ly service (OK, I will stop now) expands Avelo’s reach to the U.S. East Coast. The first new U.S. airline in 15 years, Avelo has been flying to nine destinations across the U.S. West from Burbank, CA since April 28. With New Haven as its East Coast hub, Avelo will now be the first airline to offer nonstop flights between HVN and Florida.
Getaways to the Sunshine State will start November 3. Avelo will operate nonstop flights from New Haven (HVN) to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Tampa International Airport (TPA).
As a low-fare airline, Avelo is kicking off its Florida flights with introductory fares starting at $59*. Tickets can be booked at AveloAir.com.
The introductory fare must be booked by August 31, 2021, for travel by November 17, 2021, and is available on a limited number of seats. Additional fees for carry-on and checked bags, assigned seats and other optional services may apply.
“Connecticut residents told us they want more convenient and affordable options for flying to Florida,” said Avelo Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy. “The refreshingly simple and smooth HVN small-airport experience will ensure our Customers depart relaxed and ready for some fun in the sun.”
Over 3.5 million people live in Connecticut. New Haven, eighty miles from Manhattan, is far more convenient for them than New York area airports like LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark. Tweed-New Haven is near multiple major highways and commuter railways, making it Connecticut’s most convenient and easily accessible airport. “For years the people of southern Connecticut have been asking for more options when it comes to flights and – starting this November – that will be a reality,” said Sean Scanlon, Executive Director of Tweed-New Haven Airport.

Avelo will operate single-class Boeing 737-700 Next Gen aircraft with 147 seats from New Haven. The idea is to provide a more comfortable, mainline jet experience than the small regional jets and turboprops that historically served the airport. Avelo will also invest $1.2 million to help upgrade facilities and operations as part of an overall $100 million modernization, including a new terminal and extended runway at HVN.
Avelo says that in its first one hundred days of operation, Avelo has operated more than 1,250 flights with only three cancellations, a 99.8% completion factor. During that same period, Avelo achieved an 85% on-time arrival performance.
Avelo is focused on the leisure traveler, and Connecticut Yankees can find something to enjoy in each of the airline’s new Florida destinations.
Avelo will offer five flights per week to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale staring on November 4. The airline will fly times per week to Tampa Bay starting November 8, with two flights per week to Fort Meyers beginning November 11.
Greater Fort Lauderdale offers over three hundred sunny days with twenty-four miles of golden sandy beaches and waterfront dining and shopping. With comfortable year-round temperatures, the Atlantic Ocean is always inviting to scuba divers, snorkelers, stand-up paddleboarders and jet skiers. The destination also boasts luxury hotels, museums, nightlife, shopping, casinos, and family fun.
Fort Myers, on the peaceful Gulf of Mexico, is known for its beautiful weather, shell-strewn beaches, outdoor recreational activities, and historic estates. It also is a gateway to a stretch of barrier islands including the Sanibel area, known for its beaches, fishing, nature tours, bird watching, golf, and tennis.
Orlando, of course, is the Theme Park Capital of the World for its parks and attractions, such as Disney World and Universal Orlando. Avelo launched during COVID-19, and the pandemic is still with us. The FAA recently announced that it is extending the mask mandate for passengers on US flights through January 22, 2022. In addition to masking, Avelo says it encourages social distancing best practices whenever possible. The company says all customers receive a convenience package containing a hand sanitizer and bottled water.
Avelo also regularly cleans and disinfects its aircraft, while tray tables, galleys, lavatories, and all other high touch surfaces are sanitized every evening with hospital-grade disinfectant. Avelo also treats it aircraft regularly with an advanced antimicrobial protectant that kills viruses, germs, and bacteria.
